At this year’s Eurocucina, the world’s foremost design brands took up the challenge of rethinking how we use this beloved room, coming up with kitchens that save on space, integrate cutting-edge technology or even let you grow and harvest crops. Food prep will never be the same again. Here are five innovative kitchen ideas.
The German kitchen manufacturer has come up with +Stage – a unique and compact solution that is just 120cm wide. Its ingenious design offers slide-in hinged doors called pocket doors that tuck into a 64.5cm depth. The doors can blend harmoniously into a tall unit line or be opened up to showcase their contents as a visually striking standalone unit. Create a bar or a functional kitchenette, put it in your bedroom, living room or office – it’s really up to you to set the scene. And with the myriad of finishes and front colours available, personalisation is assured.
A kitchen can often serve as a repository of precious memories, recalling nostalgic scenes of our childhood watching grandma preparing a delicious meal at the stove. Valcucine’s latest Genius Loci design offers the perfect fusion of past and present – respecting our culinary heritage while integrating the latest technology. It appears modern but every piece features handcrafted workmanship and customisation to the nth degree, such as copper trim on the drawer’s fascia, handcrafted embellishments such as wood-carved inlays, or even the choice of stone or marble.
It’s not short on cutting-edge solutions either – Valcucine’s patented V-Motion kit, which includes new smart opening and closing systems for the drawers and doors, responds to the slightest touch. A new Gourmet System offers semi-professional features such as a steel top with concealed storage. Valcucine’s collaboration with AEG appliances has resulted in a newly developed ceramic induction hob that is flushed completely level to make cleaning a breeze while ensuring a seamless aesthetic. During Salone del Mobile week, guests witnessed a master mosaic artisan working on the front panels of Genius Loci’s drawers, which suggests the customisation options awaiting buyers.
An updated version of the 2004 model designed by Dante Bonuccelli, Tivali has changed from a linear to a corner solution. While its basic elements remain, it now offers large folding doors that glide into the side compartments with a light, fluid touch, thanks to a mechanism designed in the 1990s by Luca Meda and patented by Dada. Once you’re done with cooking, simply fold your kitchen away by closing the smooth gliding large doors.
It’s practically a given that the experts at Poliform can create kitchen designs that are sleek and functional. Arthena in the Varenna collection keeps things ultra-streamlined by doing away with handles and using a special processing of the edges framing the door panels. The effect is sleek but not clinical – Caneletto walnut and black elm imbue it with a touch of warmth, partnered in high style by new materials such as bronzed black liquid metal, chamfered Fossena stone blaze and moka anodised doors and fume reflecting glass. But it’s the brand’s homage to the farm-to-table concept that turns heads. The system’s integrated herb racks let you grow an assortment of herbs and miniature vegetables right in your kitchen, while the addition of white LED lighting gives even black thumbs a valuable headstart.
Giorgetti is typically associated with producing some of the world’s most luxurious leather and wood furniture, but it stepped out of its comfort zone this year when it launched GK.01, its first kitchen design. It acknowledges shrinking kitchen spaces – seen in space-saving innovations such as the sliding countertop mechanism and hinged opening pocket slide. Luxury remains a byword though – opulent worktops in brushed Pietra grey marble from Iran and Peltrox are paired with warm woods like black walnut and ash.
