To celebrate the 20th anniversary of its innovative Spring Drive technology, a mechanical movement with a hybrid regulating system that achieves quartz precision without the need for a battery, Grand Seiko added three new designs to its sports collection. The SBGA403 model shown here joining the SBGC230 and the SBGC231 celebrates the brand’s original rampant lion symbol, which dates back to the first Grand Seiko, in 1960, featured in 18-karat yellow gold.
The case lugs are designed to resemble the big cat’s claws, and polished to perfection using the Japanese watchmaker’s unique Zaratsu technique, which creates sharply defined edges on the case and bracelet and a distortion-free mirror finish. But the standout feature is the textured dial, with an intricate, hand-carved pattern set in place with hundreds of tons of pressure applied to the metal base and finished with a thick layer of clear coating.
