For much of the 20th century, wristwatches with complications were exceedingly rare due to the challenges in development and manufacturing. However, advancements in engineering technology in the mid-1980s enabled more watchmakers to create complex timepieces. Despite this progress, combining multiple specialized functions in a single watch remains a hallmark of elite horology.
Vacheron Constantin’s Minute Repeater Tourbillon Split-Seconds Monopusher Chronograph, crafted by their Les Cabinotiers department, is a standout example. Introduced at Watches and Wonders Geneva, this 18-karat-pink-gold wristwatch boasts an unprecedented combination of complications, including a minute repeater, split-seconds chronograph, and tourbillon—all within a slender 10.4 mm thick movement containing 698 components.
Despite its complexity, the watch maintains an elegant and understated aesthetic, featuring a dual-tone dial in dark gray for maximum readability. The meticulous hand-finishing of the caseback adds to its beauty, with blackened bridges and mirror-polished surfaces creating a visually stunning contrast.
According to Christian Selmoni, Vacheron Constantin’s style and heritage director, the watchmaker behind this masterpiece is akin to a “Mozart of complications.” However, despite its superlative features, Selmoni notes the watch’s subtle elegance, suggesting that only the wearer truly appreciates its exceptional complexity.
