In recent years, Argentina and Chile have emerged as significant players in the global wine industry, producing exceptional, cellar-worthy wines that rival those from renowned wine regions like Napa and Bordeaux.
In Argentina, top vintners such as Achaval Ferrer, Viña Cobos, Alta Vista, Bodega Chacra, and Cheval des Andes are crafting single-vineyard and small-plot wines that showcase the country’s winemaking potential. Malbec remains the star grape variety, thriving in Mendoza’s high-altitude soils. Other noteworthy wines from Argentina include Cabernet Sauvignon, red blends, and cold-climate Pinot Noir from Patagonia.
Chile, with its long winemaking history dating back to the first Spanish settlers, has also become known for producing exceptional wines. Cabernet Sauvignon and red blends are among the finest wines from Chile, with Syrah and Carmenère also gaining recognition. Despite Carmenère’s historically low acidity, Chilean winemakers have successfully crafted single-varietal Carmenère wines of great elegance and longevity.
Both countries boast a mix of legacy wineries with centuries-old traditions and newcomers bringing innovation to the regions. With their diverse terroirs and dedication to quality winemaking, Argentina and Chile are establishing themselves as must-visit destinations for wine enthusiasts seeking exceptional wines with a sense of place.
