British adventurers Matt Jones and Steve Brooks, known for their daring exploits, purchased their first Spitfire in 2010 with the vision of establishing the world’s inaugural Spitfire pilot training school. However, it was their acquisition of a second Spitfire, a Mark IX in need of restoration, that sparked their ambitious plan. Inspired by the plane’s historic significance and their own adventurous spirit, they decided to embark on an unprecedented journey: circumnavigating the globe in a Spitfire.
Their journey, scheduled for 2020, would take them from England to the United States, across the Bering Strait, over Japan and China, and back home via the Middle East and North Africa. Despite challenges such as the Spitfire’s limited range, maintenance costs exceeding $100,000 annually, and the complexity of flying such a historic aircraft, Jones and Brooks are undeterred. They view the endeavor as a tribute to the Spitfire’s legacy as a symbol of freedom and to the individuals who sacrificed for democracy.
